  • Always use the smallest possible insulated food transport box
If you use a small insulated transport box completely full of cold or frozen food product you have the the maximum quantity of product relative to the surface area of the insulated box. This will minimize any heat gain from warmer air outside of the food transport box
  • Larger food transport boxes have higher heat gains
A Large insulated food transport box will have a larger surface area and hence higher heat gains
  • Larger insulated transport boxes contain more air which will absorb the coldness from the food

A large insulated food transport box will, if not filled, contain a large quantity of air which will absorb coldness from the cold or frozen food being transported

In addition air gaps between cold or frozen food products, will allow circulation inside the insulated box increasing heating rates

  • Consider adding extra cooling to the box e.g. Thermo-Boost or Eutectic plates
Adding a cold source such as a Thermo-Boost to the box will greatly increase the time cold or frozen food can be kept in an insulated food transport box
  • Consider dividing the contents e.g. Thermo-shield
A Thermo-shield acts in two ways by reflecting coldness back into the food and also reducing air circulation inside the insulated transport box
  • When packing food boxes try to form layers to avoid air flow or use Thermo-shield
If food is packed in layers which stop air convection inside the transport box, heat transfer from the cold or frozen food to the inside surface of the insulated box will be reduced
  • When a Thermobox is opened and closed for multiple deliveries coldness inside the transport box is lost
When carrying out multiple deliveries, repeated opening of the insulated box causes heat gain. This heat loss is greatly reduced by use of products such as the Thermo-Shield which acts as a divider between layers/meals inside the coolbox. This division drastically reduces the quantity of cold air leaving the box and the associated heat gain.
  • Do things slowly!
Slow opening and closing of the lid of an insulated box containing cold or frozen food will greatly reduce the disturbance to the cold air which will naturally sit inside the box.

  • Put food in the boxes hot!
The hotter the food is when it goes in the transport boxes the longer it will stay at a suitable temperature for consumption
  • Always use the smallest possible insulated transport box when transporting hot food

  • When a Thermobox is opened and closed for multiple deliveries heat inside the transport box is lost
When carrying out multiple deliveries such as meals on wheels hot food delivery repeated opening of the insulated box causes rapid heat loss. This heat loss is greatly reduced by use of products such as the Thermo-Shield which acts as a divider between layers/meals inside the hot meals box. This division drastically reduces the quantity of hot air leaving the box and the associated heat loss.
